US Republican states. It's not just cannabis prohibition
See: US Republican states. It's not just cannabis prohibition. It's their higher overdose rates, worse healthcare, lower minimum wages, higher debt, higher murder rates, higher incarceration rates, higher poverty rates, lower percentage of female legislators. Especially when compared to Canada.
Drug war. US Republican-led War
Return to top. See: USA. The state of the nation.
See: Race, ethnicity, and drug war. And: US Republican-led war on cannabis.
This quote from Nixon aide John Ehrlichman (in 1994) is from an April 2016 Dan Baum article in Harper's Magazine: Legalize It All. How to win the war on drugs. Quote: "The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar left and black people. You understand what I’m saying? We knew we couldn’t make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders, raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did."
See: CNN info. See article: Nixon's drug war against black people and hippies.
Canada versus USA. Single Payer Healthcare costs less. And it is cheaper than drug war

Australian and Canadian gun controls = much lower murder rates
Return to top. See: NRA drug war. US National Rifle Association.
The US murder rate is 3 times that of Canada, and 5 times that of Australia. See:
Wikipedia: List of countries by intentional homicide rate.
In 1996 Australia Enacted Gun Control. We Haven’t Had a Mass Shooting Since.
Australians still own almost the same number of guns per capita as during their 1996 mass shooting, but they are now HIGHLY regulated, low capacity, and lower caliber. Far fewer own handguns compared to the US.
Republican Insurrection injured 174 police officers. Due to their Big Lie via their 24/7 propaganda echo chamber
Some Republicans say they care about police officers. But Republicans injured 174 police officers:
Wikipedia: January 6, 2021 United States Capitol attack. "Within 36 hours of the event, five people had died: one was shot by Capitol Police, another died of a drug overdose, and three died of natural causes, including a police officer. Many people were injured, including 174 police officers. Four officers who responded to the attack died by suicide within seven months."
Like the Republican-led drug war, it is another example of excessive force. See: Drug war and other excessive uses of force.
Good cops, bad cops, and drug war
There are plenty of good cops. Many of us have relatives who have been police officers. But Republicans block efforts to remove the bad cops, the violent cops, the racist cops.
Republicans need bad cops to implement Republican racism. Especially in the South. See the racist Republican "Southern Strategy":
Race, ethnicity, and drug war.
Some Democrat states are permanently removing bad cops.
30 Sep 2021: Democratic Gov. Newsom approves sweeping reforms to law enforcement in California. "allowing their badges to be permanently taken away for excessive force, dishonesty and racial bias. ... mandating that officers intercede when they see a colleague using excessive force and immediately report the incident. ... fails to intercede could be disciplined up to and including the same penalty as the officer who committed the excessive force."
